Further Background Information
• Experience in dispute resolution:
I have worked with families in conflict since 1976. I began my private counselling practice in 1989 in Whitehorse and focused on Employee Assistance and short-term counselling and have offered individuals and families support through difficult times ever since. After taking the full Justice Institute of BC training course for mediators and becoming certified in 1994, I added family mediation to my services. I have served families as a coach when engaged in collaborative legal processes.
I have provided training in conflict resolution and mediation since 1995 in the Yukon, other parts of Canada and overseas- specifically in the Middle East and Turkey. I customize training for specific groups including First Nations, government, and Non-profit agencies.
• Philosophy:
I start from the point of view that anyone seeking mediation is experiencing one of the most difficult times of their lives. Parties in conflict are doing their best to survive a challenging situation and need more skills and support than they currently have. The role of the mediator is to provide a safe place to explore the conflict and find out where the areas of resolution lie and to help them choose the one that meets everyone’s needs to the best possible degree. The mediator helps the clients to access their “better selves” to show up for the business of problem –solving and keeps them emotionally on track.
